Nikon Super Coolscan 9000
We're now using the Nikon Super Coolscan 9000 exclusively for 35mm Slide Scanning!
In fact, DigMyPics is the only major scanning company that does.
Cleaner, Crisper Slide Scans
The Nikon Coolscan 9000 comes with an upgraded version of Kodak's
Digital ICE Technology not available on the Nikon
5000. This "Pro" version provides a more robust technology that is designed to work with
Kodachrome film types.
What Is Digital ICE?

Scanned with Digital ICE on the Nikon 9000 |
Digital ICE is a proprietary technology developed by Applied Science Fiction that automatically removes surface
debris, such as dust and scratches, from scanned images.
The version of Digital ICE that is installed on the Nikon 9000 allows us
to scan pretty much every type of slide with the benefits of Digital ICE.
Previous
versions of Digital ICE would mistake eye lashes and other fine lines (such
as power lines, or patterns) as scratches and thus “remove” them from the image
erroneously. The newer version of Digital ICE produces a more consistent, cleaner, clearer
image without the loss in detail. See an example of ICEy Eye below.
View the
Nikon 9000 scanner's product page where Nikon declares the 9000 scanner's
Digital ICE system as "more compatible with Kodachrome film", an
admission to the shortcomings in the Nikon 5000 scanner. The technology is
a hardware upgrade that can't be imitated by simply adjusting the settings on
the Nikon 5000, as some scanning companies have tried to claim.

Original Slide |
We took this Kodachrome slide and scanned it on both a Nikon 5000 using Digital
ICE and then again on a Nikon 9000 using Digital ICE. We're showing a
portion of the image below from each scanner.
Notice the freaky effect on the boy's eyes as scanned by Nikon 5000. We call that ICEy Eye
and its a defect in the Nikon 5000 scanner's version of digital ICE.
This problem is the reason we decided to start using the Nikon 9000 scanners
exclusively for slides and it's why you should insist on having your slides
scanned on the Nikon 9000. |

A Nice clean scan. You can read his hat, his eyes look normal. |
This image is full of Nikon 5000 Digital ICE issues. Notice the ICEy
eyes, the jagged brim of his hat, the lettering on his hat, and the general lack of
crispness. As you can see, the Nikon 9000 provides a much better scan! |
Don't give your family the ICEy Eye! Insist on scanning your slides
on a Nikon 9000.
